What will new bathrooms be wearing this season? If they take their cues in leading subway design centers and the Coverings tile and stone trade show this spring, we are going to be seeing creative new approaches to use tile : more graphics, more textures, and colors that vary from ultra-bright to dim and dramatic.
Tile is durable and functional, but as these photographs show, it’s anything but dull. This season, it’s also energetic, creative, eclectic and lively. Continue Reading for a preview out of Coverings, heading to Orlando in April. What will you be looking for in a showroom near you?

Tile goes really graphic this season, as seen on the wall behind the sink. Yes, it’s impartial, but the combination and layout make it work as an accent wall. This punctuates an otherwise quiet black, gray and white area designed by Tile of Spain.
Brights will shout out against neutrals this season. Start looking for vivid greens, oranges and other “happy” colors to highlight neutral area tile in baths, as seen here from American tile maker Crossville.
Mosaics go graphic in 2012, as noticed in this tub surround from Tile of Italy. The random pattern has a digital sense to it, perfect for the ever-increasing presence of technologies in our daily lives, but its quiet tones provide a soothing component.
Start looking for vibrant colours and subtle patterns in baths this year. This Tile of Italy bath goes on the top in its use of color but chooses greens and blues as a relaxing counter. The patterns you’ll see this season are subtle, just there to add interest.
Dark and dramatic are hot this season, too, as are blending formats. Here you see mosaics and big format together in a Crossville bath. This tendency works nicely for shower floors that need more grip, in addition to shower walls for play.
Carrara has always been popular for traditional baths. Start looking for it this season in contemporary bathrooms, as well. What may surprise you the most is the amazing ability of porcelain tile to stay in for natural rock, as it does in this Tile of Spain master suite. Two major advantages of porcelain include better durability without the demand for sealing.
Textured tile will continue to be a hot fashion in 2012. Animal prints, geometrics, pebble, linen and wood styles can all lend a stylish touch to your bathroom floor and walls.

Metallics will continue to mix into substance blends to add attention to bathroom tile design. Start looking for silver and bronze tones to be especially strong.
Linen looks, as exhibited on the area tile, will also be a continuing tendency for 2012.
You’d never put real wood at a shower but one of the most powerful trends in tile is wood-styled tile. It’s a wood-like complete and texture, but it’s totally water-safe.
The lace pattern — and other intriguing textures — will also be ongoing tendencies for 2012.
Large-format tiles will continue to be a hot fashion in 2012. They counter a small-tile accent wall. Many times, you will see just big tile pair row after row, vertically or horizontally. The look is clean and contemporary.
